Rankings Speculation Open Thread

While the fan-friendliness of the Regionals tournament structure will probably continue to be debated, there's no doubt that it did wildly succeed in one intended way -- with all participating teams playing either three or four bouts over the course of the weekends, it's a heck of a lot easier to compare teams now for accurate rankings.

East Regionals ref helmet cam footage

Hey, remember the streaming video from the 2008 WFTDA East Regionals in Madison?  That video was shot by Natalie Hinckley and her crew at Hinkley Productions, and was a rough live edit of footage intended for mastering to DVDs, which are now available from the Mad Rollin' Dolls.

New York Times Commits Blatant Act Of Journalism

Ever since the inception of DNN about a year and a half ago, I've used the blog space to take more than a few (arguably cheap) shots at shoddy, cliche-ridden media pieces about modern roller derby.

We have six months. Where are your scores?!?

Last month, I wrote about about the coming flood of potential new fans, with an eye toward our overall readiness as a community.  Today, I write with your first assignment, which I will issue in all caps with bold type so that you will understand that, yes, I am yelling about this.

Totally FACEGUN

Bruz-Her from the Kansas City Roller Warriors shares this nugget:

The local cable sports channel, Metro Sports, filmed our league all
last season and have made a series(10 parts maybe) that will start
airing in January.  Wait, did I say sports channel?!!   Here's the link
of the previews
in case you are interested.

Recently received from independent comic book publisher ONI Press: here's something guaranteed to appeal to the inner fanboy/fangirl in all of us:

ATTENTION all DNN readers - I have three questions for you:

(1) Are you a derby girl (seasoned vet or Fresh Meat), WFTDA league announcer, staff member or ref?

(2) Is your brain ready to burst with a creative, unique, interesting, or otherwise KICK ASS derby story you're DYING to see come to life in beautiful full-color illustrations?

Exciting new breakthroughs in ref-dissing technology!

Since the 2007 ECE, this infamous sign has always been the gold standard when it comes hating on roller derby refs:

However, at last weekend's Carolina vs. Madison bout, a strong new contender has emerged:

Killbox retires (sort of)

Just read this on the Myspace blog of Detroit Derby Girls' star (and Team Awesome stalwart) Killbox:

I have officially changed my derby name;

My new derby name is my name: Sarah Hipel

It's been about a year in the making and I won't go into the rational behind it, but;
'I would like to skate under my own name' kind of sums it up.

Big opportunity for a member of Team Douchebag: go register "Sarah Hipel" on twoevils.org and then complain that Sarah Hipel stole your name :)
