DNN's founder, co-managing editor and chief recapper Justice Feelgood Marshall wasn't always a slave to the keyboard -- in fact, many veteran rollergirls still know him best for his work in stripes (and a skirt). He doesn't ref as much as he once did, in no small part because reporting competes with reffing for his attention, but that didn't prevent him from reaching a milestone a week ago -- the Charm City Roller Girls championship marked the 100th bout Justice has reffed (yes, he keeps track).
There can't be many refs in this young sport with more experience than that, but surely there are a couple -- what's your total? Skaters, how about your bout totals?

Congratulations!!
Congratulations, Justice! I myself estimate that I've played in 23 bouts... hopefully I've got at least 77 more to go in years to come!!
I'm impressed
Mostly by the fact that you keep track, but also by the dedication.
Congrats.
How long before you write 100 bout recaps?
I'm impressed, too.
Anyone who can ref 100 bouts without being turned into Zebra Cakes deserves a medal, or at the very least, a display of metal hands. \m/\m/
Just a swag...
Not counting the stuff I have left to archive (yes, I'm really behind), I'm at around 80 bouts photographed. If that number is right, I'll hit 100 by the end of the month.
Sure, not as grueling as reffing a bout; but it hopefully means something.

Congratulations, Justice!
It's interesting that the 2 bouts I saw you ref (75 & 76) are the 2 you don't have scores for...
Duke City Derby
no venue, no fans, no season, no problem
congrats!
neeeeeeeerrrrd
mostly because you have a spreadsheet..haha
wow...
congratulations! that's a lot of bouts! i think i've only been in 28 myself since i started derby about 2 and a half years ago, but that may not be entirely accurate. more of an estimation.
"speak softly and carry a big ass; you will go far."

Kudos, JFM. That's a lotta penalty box time you've doled out.
Century Club!
I hit 122 at Dutchland the other day, and I would never've started counting if it weren't for Justice and Hambone...
no fair
Hey, no fair -- charm city plays double headers!
I assume you are tallying two 40-minute bouts as one bout or one-and-a-half bouts ... certainly not as two...
- Hambone, sitting on about 90.5, depending on how you count (or don't count) mini-bouts, 20-minute exhibitions, RollerCon challenge bouts, etc.
Compromise
I am counting a doubleheader of 40 minute bouts as two bouts -- but as your sig points out, I'm also not counting all those challenge bouts at Rollercon, the derby brats bouts at 2007 Nationals, various free outdoor exhibitions that Charm City's done for promotional purposes, etc, so I figure it's a wash in the end.

You, Hammy, and Justin are the Gold Standard of derby reffing.

and I mean that in a NICE way, DD.
The prosecution rests.

arm chair reffing
i'm going to include all the ones i've reffed from the audience--you know, the ones where i was right about everything.
not so fast, fella
okay i finally looked at the JFM reffing google spreadsheet
sorry to break it to you, but you're on 99.
the header row doesn't count.
Endless Justin is rubbing off on you
You're no fun at all :)
JFM
No, this is a good thing to catch!
Now we know to throw you a big ol centennial party at your next reffing engagement. Which will be......[drum roll please].......*
* Roller leagues ACT NOW to book JFM's 100th! Coming to a venue near you for the low low price of... [justice inserts price of new skates(?) he's dying for here]
the rest of us...
The rest of us look at 100 bouts by JFM and say "holy crap, that's a lot of bouts" Leave it to the rest of the refs to actually count 'em! Congrats JFM, hopefully the recount comes out solid and you're not sent off for a major.
The Cal Ripken of Roller Derby Reffin'
Yes, JFM..... roller derby as we know it would not be the same with out you. So, a big fat congrats on 100 games! I may not always tell you this because I am too busy questioning your calls, but, I love you.

Another thing.
And don't forget to mention the other derby call on his time: scating for the Harm City Homicide.
Oh Dear.
And don't forget to mention the other derby call on his time: scating for the Harm City Homicide.
Quoted. That's a bit of a personal thing to bring up in a public place.
Let's just be glad
That Simonator didn't compound the error by making the depressingly common typo of referring to us as the "Harm City Homocide."
JFM
Murderous Rage
Homocide sounds like the crime of killing someone for mixing up their homophones.
Their's rage in there ayes.
- bjmacke (a.k.a. Apron)
If only the Balti Police had been so vigilant
Didn't we get some leftover crime-scene tape from them at some point that was printed "HOMOCIDE"? Or perhaps that was here in Kentucky, in which case it probably wasn't a misspelling.
Either way, not good.
howie~
One of the best.
Mr.Pistol: If you have not met or had the pleasure of being Reffed by this old sage of derby, let me tell you he is one of the best. I give this guy(and his other refs) hell so that my girls get a fair shake. He is always fair, concise, looks good in a skirt and has a good time with ya' afterwords. I give JFM and his staff partial credit for the accent of CCRG, due to their observations of the ruleset(s). Congratz JFM on your milestone.
Let's see if this

Much credit due
My count is only 73, with a lot of asterisks, and I don't think that I'll ever reach 100...er, at least I hope not. I had the good fortune of visiting JFGM for my first inter-league game ever, a couple of years ago. With that being my first inter-league bout, he made quite an impression on me, that has shaped my approach to head reffing ever since. Unfortunately, he also allowed my league to believe that head refs can, and should, write exceptional bout recaps. Justice knows that I have modeled my write-ups after his for years. When I finally gain the sense to stop reffing, I can only hope to follow his lead again, and emulate his skills, as a respected derby journalist.
Congrats, Justice. Always a supporter of all that you do,
