Kevin Noonan, a sports/opinion writer for the News Journal in Delaware, has this mixed-message about the Wilmington City Ruff Rollers and derby in general. While he seems to respect the sport, he doesn't seem to like sexy ladies (references to Sodom and Gommorah suggest it might be a religious thing). "A little different? Imagine the Eagles promoting their games by having two players wrestle while covered in K-Y Jelly."
I don't know what bout he was at...
As a skater who competed in that bout I have to say that both leagues did a phenomenal job playing. Being on the visiting team, I don't know anything about KY Jelly wrestling or Pimps n Hoez as he refers to in the article, but I can say that the Wilmington ladies were classy hostesses all the way, not to mention the fact that they played a tough game and threw hardass hits!!!
I will finish by saying that I'm never really affected by an article about a sport's game that #1 is printed over 2 1/2 weeks after the event and #2 doesn't mention the score (which was Dutchland 104-Wilmington 102 btw, had to put that in there!). Then again, this was more of an editorial...to each his own!
A decision leagues have to struggle with
First and foremost, the way the Eagles are playing they WOULD be better off having two players wrestle while covered in K-Y Jelly.
Secondly, it's these types of promotions/antics and others (spank alley, wheel of discipline) that are hotly debated. Two or three years ago, as derby was trying to grab an audience that didn't know anything about the game, most leagues had an extreme entertainment hook to draw fans into the venue. In the meantime, as skaters and fans have come to expect more sport than bench-clearing brawls and panty flashes, many leagues have gone to more comfortable, conservative uniforms and have dropped the extraneous entertainment. I have mixed emotions about cutting all of it out of league play, as, to me, it is a true bout, but has room as an entertaining event. But, a lot of the crazy stuff gets old to everyone after a season or so if it's not kept fresh with new ideas. A number of new leagues have skipped that stuff completely.
